Netherlands phone numbers: country code +31, area codes and mobile numbers

The country code for the Netherlands is +31, written as 0031 when you dial the international prefix by hand. A Dutch phone number has 10 digits including a leading 0. When you call from abroad you replace that 0 with +31, so Amsterdam's 020 becomes +31 20 and a mobile number starting with 06 becomes +31 6. Everything else on this page follows from those two rules.

How do I call the Netherlands from abroad?

Dial the international prefix of the country you are in, then 31, then the Dutch number without its leading 0. From most of the world the prefix is 00, so a landline written locally as 020 123 4567 becomes 0031 20 123 4567 and a mobile number 06 1234 5678 becomes 0031 6 1234 5678. From the United States and Canada the prefix is 011, so you dial 011 31 20 123 4567. On a mobile phone you can simply type the plus sign: +31 20 123 4567 works from every country and is the safest way to store a Dutch number in your contacts.

The Netherlands is in the Central European time zone (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer). Calls from another EU country to a Dutch number are price-capped under EU rules (Regulation 2018/1971, article 50: at most € 0.19 per minute excluding VAT for calls made from your home network). From outside the EU the price depends entirely on your own provider.

What does a Dutch phone number look like?

Dutch numbers are 10 digits long, with a few exceptions listed below. The first digits after the 0 tell you what kind of number it is. This is laid down in the national numbering plan (Nummerplan telefoon- en ISDN-diensten) managed by the ACM, the Dutch telecoms regulator.

Two things catch foreigners out. First, the leading 0 is part of the number inside the Netherlands but is always dropped after +31. Second, 0800 and 0900 numbers are usually not reachable from abroad at all, and where they are, your provider may charge international rates on top of the premium rate. If a company only lists a 0900 number, look for its 088 or geographic number instead.

Dutch mobile numbers: what does +31 6 mean?

Every Dutch mobile number starts with 06, followed by eight digits: 10 digits in all, or +31 6 plus eight digits in international format. That is how a Dutch mobile shows up on WhatsApp, in a missed-call list or on a business card. Mobile numbers are not tied to a region, and a number issued by one carrier may have moved to another through number portability, so the prefix after 06 does not reliably tell you which network someone is on. Prepaid SIM cards can be bought without registration in the Netherlands, so a mobile number does not identify its owner either.

Numbers starting with +31 97 are not mobile numbers, even though they run over the mobile networks: the 097 range is reserved for devices such as smart meters and alarm systems.

All 141 area codes in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has 141 geographic area codes: 30 three-digit codes for the larger cities and 111 four-digit codes for smaller towns and rural areas. A landline number is the area code plus a subscriber number, 10 digits in all. The area code is dialled in full even for local calls. The regulator requires the user of a geographic number to have an address in that area, so a landline number does tell you roughly where a company or person is based.

How do I call abroad from the Netherlands?

Dial 00 (or +) followed by the country code and the number without its leading 0. To call London from a Dutch phone you dial 0044 20 …; to call New York you dial 001 212 …. The Netherlands uses the same international prefix 00 as the rest of Europe. The country codes of all countries are listed (in Dutch) at landnummers.

Who called me from a Dutch number?

Type the number in the search box at the top of this page. wiebelde.nl looks it up in the public numbering register of the ACM, which records who holds each block of numbers: for 088 numbers that is the company itself, for landline and mobile numbers it is the carrier that issued the block. Below that you see what other people reported about the number. Where there is nothing to show, the page says so; we never invent a name.

Keep in mind that the number on your screen can be spoofed: a caller can make any number appear, including a Dutch bank's. A +31 number is therefore no proof that the call came from the Netherlands. If you were called once from an unknown foreign-looking number and it hung up immediately, do not call back — that is the classic wangiri pattern, where the callback goes to an expensive premium line.

Is +31 the same as 0031?

Yes. The plus sign stands for "the international prefix of whatever country you are calling from", which is 00 in Europe and most of the world and 011 in North America. 0031 and +31 lead to exactly the same Dutch number. Only the plus form works everywhere, which is why it is the recommended way to write and save a number.
